Digital edge accelerometer for Condition based Monitoring: Tronics to showcase its innovation at electronica 2024

condition based monitoring accelerometer

Condition based Monitoring status

Most processes in industries like manufacturing, energy, wind turbine, transportation and others depend on rotating equipment such as motor, pump, compressor, fan, blower, conveyor, spindle… Abnormal operating modes of these assets increase energy consumption and CO2 emission. But above all, any unpredicted asset downtime generates unexpected costs. Thus, Condition Based Monitoring (CbM) systems acting as a “machine doctor” are or are being deployed to monitor operating mode, predict maintenance and prevent failure of such rotating equipment. To detect unbalance, misalignment but also bearing or gearing issues, CbM system must rely on highly sensitive and high frequency vibration sensors. Piezoelectric based accelerometers have been up to now the most known sensors used for vibration measurement. However, these sensors offer two major drawbacks: an analog working mode and a direct point to gateway connection, making limited CbM design towards industrial IoT.

Towards industrial IoT Edge accelerometer

For more than a decade Tronics digital inertial MEMS sensors have contributed to the digital transformation of demanding industries requiring precision navigation or positioning systems. Leveraging its know-how enables Tronics today to extend its offer into an innovative digital MEMS accelerometer specifically designed for vibration measurement. This digital accelerometer achieves state of the art performances above 10kHz bandwidth, equivalent to the accelerometer based on incumbent technology.  With its digital mode and standard interface compatible with industrial sensor field bus, Tronics accelerometer tackles incumbent drawbacks of analog accelerometer used for vibration sensing. Edge processing capabilities included, Tronics innovation makes real the industrial IoT edge accelerometer device.

Industrial IoT Edge accelerometer to boost CbM digital transformation

Industries which run vibration measurement for their Condition based Monitoring system can now envision a complete digital transformation, starting at the bottom of the ladder with the digitalization of the vibration emitted by rotating equipment.
With a compact form factor, Tronics digital accelerometer can be mechanically embedded onto any asset. Its wide bandwidth offers OEMs and CbM players a way to continuously monitor early signs of failures such as high frequency vibration  emitted by a bearing or a gearing defect.

Tronics digital accelerometers rely on standard communication protocol and can be easily connected to an industrial field bus. CbM players will be allowed to reduce their need of expensive gateway, cables and labor.

The edge processing capabilities of Tronics digital accelerometer perform local computation. Customers will be able to remotely select their band pass filters, configure their own indicators like Peak, peak-peak, RMS, Crest factor and thus dramatically reduce amount of transferred data, focusing on key information. Acceleration and velocity raw data always remain available upon request.

Tronics’ vibration sensors innovation running live at electronica

Tronics digital accelerometer makes vibration sensor a real Industrial IoT device that keeps accelerometer performance to a high standard, seamlessly embeds onto any rotating equipment and provides live machine health indicators. In addition to its inertial MEMS sensors, Tronics will showcase at electronica (TDK booth B5.17) its innovative Industrial IoT Edge accelerometer, running live as a stethoscope mounted onto an effective simulation system that reproduces anomalies of a rotating machine.
